| Step# | Location | Description | Initials | Date |
Instructor | Obtain tubing from an instructor. | * |
Lathe | If chuck size will allow, lightly chuck internally using a three jaw chuck. If chuck size will not allow internal chucking, lightly chuck externally using a three jaw chuck. | |
Lathe | Install the internal cat head. Leave enough space to indicate the inside diameter of the tube. | |
Lathe | Bring up the dead center near the cat head. Visually center the cat head to the dead center. | |
Lathe | Bring the tailstock spindle into position and lock in place. | |
Lathe | Indicate the inside diameter of the tube as close as possible. | |
Lathe | Set up tooling to turn a concentric bearing surface approx 3-4 inches from the right end of the tube. | |
Lathe | Tighten the chuck, be careful not to use excessive chuck pressure. This will cause the tube to distort. | |
Lathe | Check for distortion using an indicator on the chucked end of the tube. | |
Instructor | Have an instructor check setup. | * |
Lathe | Turn bearing surface just enough to clean up. | |
Lathe | Face end to clean up. | |
Lathe | Pull the tailstock back. | |
Lathe | Run the saddle toward the tailstock to get it out of the way. | |
Lathe | Position the steady rest at the bearing surface. | |
Lathe | Bring the tailstock spindle back into position and lock in place. | |
Lathe | Adjust the lower jaws of the steady rest to the bearing surface of the tubing and lock in place. | |
Lathe | Bring the upper arm down and lock in place. | |
Lathe | Adjust the upper jaw of the steady rest to the bearing surface of the tubing and lock in place. | |
Lathe | Carefully remove the cat head. | |
Lathe | Set up lathe for boring. | |
Instructor | Have instructor check setup. | * |
Lathe | Bore to specifications. | |
Lathe | Deburr machined end. | |
Lathe | Remove tubing from the machine. | |
Lathe | Back off steady rest Jaws and remove the steady rest from the machine. | |
Lathe | Place anti-distortion plug in the machined end of tubing. | |
Lathe | Tighten the chuck, be careful not to use excessive chuck pressure. | |
Lathe | Turn bearing surface just enough to clean up. | |
Lathe | Face part to length. | |
Lathe | Pull the tailstock back. | |
Lathe | Run the saddle toward the tailstock to get it out of the way. | |
Lathe | Position the steady rest at the bearing surface. | |
Lathe | Bring the tailstock spindle back into position and lock in place. | |
