Turning With a Follower Rest

10 Instructor Obtain stock from your instructor. *  
20 Instructor Have your instructor fill in the dimensions on the print.
30 Lathe Face end to clean up and center drill.
40 Lathe Place part in three or four jaw chuck. Make sure you can turn the required length to the 2.75 shoulder.
50 Lathe Bring up the tailstock and bearing center.
60 Lathe Turn diameter "A" without the use of the follower rest. Check for taper and adjust if necessary.
70 Lathe Set up the follower rest and cutting tool. Remember, the follower rest follows the tool.
80 Lathe Take a light trial cut of 2 to 3 inches with the jaws of the follower rest backed off.
90 Lathe Bring the lower jaw of the follower rest in contact with trial cut portion of the part (finger tight). Tighten the locking screw.
100 Lathe Bring the upper jaw of the follower rest up to the part (finger tight). Tighten the locking screw.
110 Instructor Have your instructor check the setup. *  
120 Lathe Finish the trial cut using a heavy oil to lubricate the jaws.
130 Lathe Check the part for taper. Adjust the tailstock if necessary.
140 Lathe Finish the part to specifications.
150 Lathe Clean, deburr and inspect the part.
160 Instructor Turn in for grading. *
