| Step# | Location | Description | Initials | Date |
Instructor | Have Instructor assign a machine and side milling cutter to be setup on a "B" style arbor. Completely tear down old setup if needed. | |
Horizontal Mill | Clean the tapers in the spindle and on the arbor. Check for dirt or burrs with the bare hand. | |
Horizontal Mill | Place the arbor in the spindle with the drive keys engaged in the proper slots on the machine spindle. Insert the draw in bolt into the threads of the end of the spindle. | |
Instructor | Turn in the draw in bolt until the draw in bolt has 1 or 2 inches of thread engaged. Tighten the arbor in the spindle by turning the threaded collar on the draw in bolt with a wrench. | |
Horizontal Mill | Clean the face of the arbor flange where the arbor collars make contact. This surface must be absolutely clean and free of burrs. | |
Horizontal Mill | Place an end collar and spacing collars up to the point where the cutter will be mounted. The faces of these collars must also be absolutely clean. | |
Horizontal Mill | Place the cutter on the arbor. Clean the faces of the milling cutter. The cutter must be placed over a proper sized drive key inserted in the keyseat on the arbor. | |
Horizontal Mill | Place additional spacing collars and a bearing collar behind the cutter. A Bearing collar provides the primary support of the B style arbor. | |
Instructor | Place the nut on the end of the arbor but DO NOT tighten. The face of the nut, must be cleaned in the same manner as the arbor collars. If you tighten the nut before the overarm is in place, you will bend the arbor. | |
Horizontal Mill | Measure the bearing collar and the arbor support bushing. Clearance between the bushing and the collar should be 0.001 to 0.004 inches for a bushing size of 1.750 to 2.75 inches in diameter. If the bushing needs adjusting, see instructor for further instruction. | |
Horizontal Mill | Fill the oil reservoir in the arbor support. | |
Horizontal Mill | When the overarm support is in place, clamp the overarm support and the overarm bars. | |
Horizontal Mill | Tighten the arbor nut. | |
Horizontal Mill | Place the machine spindle in neutral. Using a dial indicator, check the cutter for side run out by carefully turning the spindle by hand. | |
Horizontal Mill | The cutter needs to run true within .002 inches per side. If it doesn’t, tear the set up down in reverse order and re-clean all of the components. | |
