10 Machine
Shop Have instructor
select a lathe.
Write in make and number.
20 Instructor Have instructor select 21 pieces
of scrap stock used for SPC.
(about 1” in diameter)
30 Machine Shop Use one piece as a set up piece.
Set up the tool and the machine
And make sure that the machine
And tool are cutting properly,
Leaving a 125 or better finish.
40 Machine Shop Set up the first actual test piece
to take a cut of approximately
0.025 to 0.030 inches off of the
diameter and about one inch long.
50 Machine Shop Take the test cut. Do not adjust
the cross slide at the end of the cut.
Take the carriage back, to the right,
out of the way. Take the part out
and mark it with a black marker as
number one.
60 Machine Shop Repeat steps 40 and 50 marking each
piece sequentially (i.e. 1.2. 3 …)until
all the parts have been done.
70 Inspection Area Using the Micrometers for SPC; check
the parts in the middle of the 1” turn,
in order, to the nearest .0001of an inch.
80 Inspection Area Using the test piece size as the blueprint
specification, code the Data and record
it on the chart.
90 Inspection Area Calculate the standard deviation and
record your answer in the space provided.
100 Inspection Area Multiply the standard deviation by 6. This
is the capability of the machine. This is also
the width of the bell curve.
110 Inspection area Fill in the bell curve below with the mean
and the standard deviation (coded).
120 Inspection area If we were going to use this machine,
what is the closest blueprint tolerance we
could hold on this machine on 99.7 % of the parts.
This is the capability of the machine.
Fill in the Machine Capability in the space provided.
130 Instructor Turn in for grading.
